People are usually confused about the terms deep web and the dark web. These are two different concepts.
The Deep Web
It is a reference to any site that cannot be accessed by any conventional search engine, these are not indexed or registered websites. Deep web: Also called as invisible web,[2] or hidden web. The deep web is a reference to any site that cannot be accessed by any regular search engine like Google, Bing, and Yahoo. The deep web information isn’t indexed. It is fully legal and legitimate content that is behind paywalls, password-protected websites, private databases, and other online resources that are not accessible to the general public. The deep web contains a significant amount of information that criminals might value — that’s why access to much of the deep web is restricted.
Example Logging into Gmail or LinkedIn, or signing in to the Wall Street Journal.
The Dark Web
This refers to websites and online communities that exist on encrypted networks and cannot be accessed through traditional web browsers, is not visible to search engines and it requires specific software, configuration, or authorization to access. Dark web is also called as dark net. On the dark web criminal activity is advertised and discussed, it’s a fully illegal marketplace. E.g.: Empire Market, Dream Market, and Nightmare Market. The dark web requires specific technologies, software like the Tor browser and the Invisible Internet Project (I2P) network — to gain access. Both tools have legitimate uses.
While browsing websites, Tor will shield your IP address, and I2P is a proxy network that can support reporters in hazardous areas. Without the Tor browser, users cannot access a dark web marketplace. Furthermore, despite being based on the Mozilla Firefox browser, Tor has poor maintenance and problems with how pages are rendered. Examining the dark web makes sense for one purpose. The dark web is an excellent place to see where vulnerabilities that are not yet known are being discussed, because of all the conversations about hacking and exploit trading that take place there. Users may have the advantage of being aware of exploit locations before they become major security risks by keeping an eye on the dark web. One drug-dealing website, Silk Road, gained such notoriety that it was frequently mentioned as one instance of the dark web from stories in the mainstream media. After being apprehended, the owner was given a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
